Acupuncture is famous for its ability to treat pain conditions, with a lot of recent research confirming and explaining the mechanisms that create such amazing results. It has been shown to stimulate the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. This effect is cumulative, meaning patients tend to feel greater and longer-lasting relief with each successive treatment. Acupuncture also causes the release of anti-inflammatory and anti-stress hormones. Modern MRI studies have even demonstrated that classical acupuncture point combinations traditionally used to treat pain trigger specific changes in the areas of the brain associated with pain messages.
Yet unlike many pain medications that focus solely on treating the pain itself, acupuncture is also able to affect the underlying causes of pain. Effective treatment is able to relax the spasming hypertonic muscles that are so often found with pain conditions while also rebalancing all the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that are affected by an injured area. The ability to rebalance the structure of an injured area is critical to permanent recovery from a pain condition that has become chronic. Additionally, acupuncture has also been shown to increase blood flow which can drastically decrease bruising, swelling, and overall healing times.
We regularly combine acupuncture with several other modalities to suit each particular case such as tuina (Chinese medical massage), cupping, moxibustion, TDP heat therapy, internal and external herbal formulas, gentle electro-stimulation, and stretching.
If you have any questions, we would be happy to do a free phone consultation to determine whether acupuncture is the right treatment for you.
